More on the DVD "Living with ADHD"
In "Living with ADHD", accomplished young photographer Daniël Naudé explains how he has managed to harness the energy associated with this hyperactive and impulsive condition to give him a competitive edge in pursuing his passion. Daniël's story proves that the symptoms of ADHD, which may cause significant impairment in functioning, can indeed be treated very effectively.
More on ADHD
ADHD is a condition most often diagnosed in childhood, particularly once school-going age is reached. The most distinctive features of ADHD are the child’s inattention to the surrounding environment, and hyperactivity and/or impulsivity. Both of these symptoms must persist for at least six months, be apparent in two or more settings, be inconsistent with the child’s developmental level, and cause significant impairment in functioning.
- To determine whether inattention exists, look for behaviours such as making careless mistakes in schoolwork, not listening when spoken to, disliking tasks that require sustained mental effort, and being easily distracted by external stimuli.
- You will see hyperactivity in fidgeting or squirming, running around when you have asked the child to stay seated, or talking excessively.
- Signs of impulsiveness are a child’s difficulty waiting his or her turn in activities, or interrupting others.
