Medihelp has 105 years’ experience in the medical schemes industry to rely on. Registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 1988 (Act No 131 of 1998), Medihelp also successfully made the transition from a restricted medical scheme to an open scheme in 1992, when we entered the competitive open medical scheme market for the first time.
Medihelp is the third-largest open medical scheme in South Africa – we proudly take responsibility for the healthcare needs of more than 237,803 South Africans.
Medihelp realised unprecedented membership growth of up to 16.2% in 2009, compared to the 3.2% achieved in 2008. Up to July 2010, we have achieved net growth of 7.5%. In this time of economic decline and uncertainty in the healthcare industry, it is indeed an exceptional accomplishment.

Because of our consistent excellent financial performance, the independent ratings company Global Credit Rating once again awarded Medihelp’s claims-paying ability with an AA- rating, the second-highest rating in the industry
Medihelp’s administrative cost as a percentage of gross contribution income has consistently been below the industry average, which means that members get more healthcare cover for every rand they contribute. Because of our net growth in membership and effective administration, our administrative costs in 2010 are on par with that of 2007.

In 2007, Medihelp moved up to 29th overall of 131 companies and was rated 10th best medium-sized company to work for in South Africa. In 2008, Medihelp finished in 8th place in the medium-sized companies category.
In 2009, Medihelp progressed to the 7th position, giving an indication of the success achieved with various human resources projects aimed at establishing Medihelp as a top employer. These projects include an employee support programme, the implementation of variable remuneration payable when contracted Scheme objectives or goals are exceeded, various training interventions, and instilling corporate values that contribute to the achievement of Medihelp’s strategic goals
